Recruiting for the future of renewables

At Green Building Renewables, we're building something big. Something we believe can transform the lives, homes, and workplaces of people in the UK by helping them to live more sustainably and lower their energy bills. This is our mission. We want to be the biggest and the best renewables business in the country. Biggest in terms of coverage of the UK by 2025 and best customer service and place to work for our people.

The recruitment and retention of a talented workforce are critical to our growth plans at Green Building Renewables. Our nationwide network of renewable installers' success is built upon our team's work at every level.

To succeed in our ambitions, we have created initiatives and invested in ways to attract and keep the best people possible. Our apprenticeship scheme, in-house specialist training hubs, and reward & recognition employee benefit scheme all play a crucial role in helping us create the skilled workforce we now have across the country, helping to transform buildings in the UK.

Working for the fastest-growing renewables business in the UK is a unique chance for our people to be part of something exceptional at a time when it has never been more critical to help people reduce their energy bills and lower their environmental impact. At Green Building Renewables, people can build a career that offers them the potential to develop professionally and personally while making a real difference in homes, communities and businesses across the country.

As we expand our business, we are looking for people with a genuine passion for making a difference, the drive to succeed and who embrace working in a committed team. Companies that become a part of the Green Building Renewables nationwide network have the benefit and access to the recruitment systems we have implemented to build our business.

Values matter in recruitment

Fundamental to our recruitment process at GBR are the values we have created. These values underpin our expectations of our people and ourselves as an employer. They are:

Develop and reward our staff

We invest in those people who want to progress. Those who contribute to the company's development will share in the benefits of our growth.

Take pride in our work and support our customers

We must have the highest quality of installation, and our customer service goes above and beyond to exceed customers' expectations; this sets us apart.

Treat all our staff with respect, fairness and understanding

We all have a part to play in the company's growth; everyone will be treated with respect and kindness.

Maximise every opportunity

We must be determined and focused on growing the company, requiring all our staff to see every interaction as an opportunity to make a sale, leave a good impression, and share our values.

These values are guiding principles for how we recruit and for the processes we have implemented. In the last year, as we have grown from a £3m turnover company to a £24 million turnover company, we have developed our processes for recruitment and built a team to drive this across GBR.

Marketing Recruitment

We appointed Angie Jones as People Manager for Green Building Renewables to help drive our recruitment. Her role is to help find the right people to join our team.

Opportunities at Green Building Renewables are varied from office-based roles in accounts, sales, marketing and operations to our field-based roles like solar panel installers, heating engineers, electrical engineers and surveyors.

Whatever the role, we seek ways to develop and reward our people by investing in those who want to progress and contribute to the company's development. We take pride in our work and support our customers. We expect the highest quality customer service at every business level that goes above and beyond our customers' expectations. This is what sets us apart. We treat all our people with respect, fairness and understanding and believe everyone has a part to play in the company's growth and future.

Our recruitment team, led by Angie, works closely with our in-house Marcomms to develop recruitment collateral. This includes attending events and creating recruitment marketing materials like our Recruitment film.

Most recently, we have expanded our recruitment methods by partnering with Michael Page Recruitment, a specialist recruitment agency. Their in-house recruitment team has integrated and become a part of ours and, in doing so, dramatically increased our capacity to recruit across the UK to fill roles we have available around the country.

Training the renewable workforce of the future

Paramount to the future of renewables in the UK is creating a skilled workforce capable of delivering and installing the technologies needed to transform buildings across the country. This is why one of the things we are committed to is the training and development of our engineers across the country. In our York HQ, we already have an in-house training facility, and we have plans to open further training facilities in our other offices. These training hubs provide engineers, both young trainees and experienced electrical engineers looking to switch careers, the opportunity to learn about renewable technology.

The success of the UK's transformation to renewable and low carbon technology is dependent upon qualified and knowledgeable specialists like solar panel installers, heat pump engineers and electrical engineers understanding the technology they install. Customers' trust resides in the quality of our installation, and renewable technology is only ever as good as its installations. We want to be the best, and to do this; we will train people in the best way possible.

A family of businesses

Any company that joins our Green Building Renewables network will have a committed and passionate people and recruitment team at their disposal. A team that understands exactly what is needed to create the UK's largest and best renewable energy installation business. Green Building Renewables has its foundations and history as a family-run business. Many of the companies who have already joined our network also have at their roots a family history which continues. My Dad and I still work together for Green Building Renewables.

Even though we have grown dramatically as a business, the spirit and feel of a family are integral to our company no matter how big we become. We understand better than anyone that renewable businesses are often a family affair and that the reputations of good family businesses matter to customers. We will always look to foster that feel at GBR, so any company that joins our network should do so knowing they join a family of businesses that has at its core the desire to see everybody succeed and prosper.
